Discussion Topic #8 - The Value of Performance

Happy Easter to all. I hope you've had a nice break this weekend. The countdown is on for both tours and I'm really looking forward to these experiences with all of you!

To keep all students involved in this week's discussion topic, I'd like to ask about the value of PERFORMANCE. In your response this week, please comment about the different experiences, feelings, and benefits of performance. It is very important to consider different performance venues - school concerts, tour, feeder school concerts, and festivals.

Have a great week!

  1. If I were to perform in a concert, it will give me a new experience because I get be on stage and to perform to the audience. If it was my first time performing, it will bring me nervousness, because I have to perform to a large group of people and if I make a mistake, it will make me embarrass.
The benefits of performing are that it will allow me to not get nervous when I have to perform, especially when I get use to performing to a large group of people. It will enhance my skills to perform and it will help me in the future.

  2. The value of performance is not to show off, but it is to show the musician's skill. If I were to perform in a concert, my feelings would simply be mixed-of fear of messing up, and excitement. The benefits of performing in a concert range depending on the performence. So let's focus on school performences - the main benefit of that would probabily be earning self confidence, and admitting mistakes-by admitting mistakes it is easier to improve and correct the mistake(s).

Boy, was that hard to write!

  3. Music is not complete until someone hears it. Our work in class and preparation would feel pointless and endless if all we did was practice until we were good at a song, them move on to another one, without ever having the opportunity to show someone else the results of our hard work. Music is all about performance.
It gives you something to be proud of, and something to work towards.
A large performance, or tour also brings the group together, putting us all through the nervousness and adrenaline and satesfaction of putting on a good show.
Smaller performances are great opportunities to prepare for larger concerts, to really feel confident about your playing. They are also important in inspiring the audience to maybe one day pick up an instrument of their own, especially if it is for a feeder school.
It is a celebreation of our sucesses, and those of the composer.

  4. Although this topic says the value of performance, and assuming performance as in music/band. I will state right now that I believe that this topic should not only be limited to band performance.
The value of performance I'd say is pretty high. The idea of performing is to show others your ability of what you can do (dancing, singing, etc.) Although anyone can do these things in private, it takes confidence, and nerves of steel to perform in front or for others. whether one be performing alone, or in a group, to perform for an audience shows that you a proud of what you can do, so proud you do not care what the audience thinks. All that matters is you got the guts to perform in front of a crowd and perform. In fact performing can be an achievement for yourself or others.

  5. Performing is when you when you really get to let out all you've been working for. It's what you build up to. It's like the grand opening of a building for the construction crew. All their hard work served its purpose and has come to a close.

  6. The value of performance is different to everyone. This is because everyone has a different view and different beliefs. Well, I think that concerts at school are way different from festivals. At a school concert, I would be feeling just a bit excited about performing because we, as a full ensemble, get to show what we have been working on to the school. However, at a festival, I would be more determined to do my best since it's a competition against other schools. I believe that our school is at a A- level in terms of performance. So I feel that we could do better and encourage others.

  7. Performing is not only to share music with the audience, but also the grand finale of showcasing the piece, music, and our hard work. It's basically everything that we worked for.
Performing makes me feel quite nervous but excited at the same time and it's not something I'd ever want to mess up on, especially since the french horn usually has a part or two that can really be heard/is important to the piece.
Performing can benefit us by making us less scared and nervous to be on the stage. It's also quite an experience and rush performing with a group like ours.

  8. Performance is about sharing. The performers get to share a piece of their hard work with the audience, and the audience shares a moment of musical connection with the performers. Don't forget that most (if not all) of the audience members are there because they want to be. The interesting thing about performance is that it is very different to be on the stage than it is to be in the audience. All of us, I assume, have been to a concert or a play, and we have obviously all performed on stage. When you're on stage, you have experienced all of the practice that has gone into it but the audience doesn't know what to expect. The performers only have one shot to show the audience whatever it is they are trying to show. As a performer, I get a thrill every time I go on stage. If I make a mistake, I may be disappointed, but the audience probably didn't even notice. As an audience member, I get excited because I want to discover what is going to happen on the stage. Performance, no matter what the venue is, embodies both of these roles and while performer and audience member may have different feelings, they are sharing the experience. The benefit? Dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of people get to come together and enjoy the music!

  9. Performing is about showing the audience what you have accomplished/learned, and give them an experience to rememebr. Performing makes me feel nervous in the beginning, but once you make your first sound, and it is a good one, you feel much better and it gives you the boost of confidence that the rest of the performance will sound good.
The benefit of a performance is that the more on stage performances you do, the easier they get.

  10. Performances are usually a great experience filled with new things to learn and new things to see. It gives everyone a chance to perform in front of a live audience that can make them feel nervous, but only if your performing not watching.

When you have a performance more than once you get used to it. You get feelings like excitement, eagerness, and wondering whats going to happen. It can prepare you for later in the future. Maybe when you join a play, a band, orchestra, dance groups. Always show your best when on stage. Happy late easter!

  11. A performance helps gives a musician the valuable experience to perform on the stage in the spot light. In the beginning, for me, it felt intimidating and awkward, because I could only see black when I stare back at the audience, and knowing that the audience could see me. However, performing in a performance is beneficial to a musician because it prepares us for the future, as there will be other opportunities to perform , whether it’s public speaking or playing in a concert band.

  12. For me I think that performing is a way to show off all our hard work and putting everything we learned into our music. As well it would help get us used to being on the spotlight and having an audience. For me whenever I play in a concert or a parade, I am excite and I find it really fun to perform for an audience since I think there no point of practicing if there no one to hear it. However in competitions, when I perform I feel very nervous because everything someone does in the performance will change the outcome.

  13. I also agree with many others here that the value of performance is quite high. Usually, I feel kind of nervous when I’m performing because, like others have also mentioned, I don’t want to mess up. I think a performance is the final step in the process of doing something; it’s not only for musical purposes. Although the generalized definition of a performance is a concert or festival, I think that a performance can also be thought of as a final test. By performing, we benefit a lot because we’re: gaining experience, working out our nervousness, and we also receive feedback from the audience that can help us improve. I also think that different performance venues yield different results. This is because, in our case, we probably feel less nervous and more comfortable playing school concerts at Tech. I guess you can compare this to sports where teams are said to have a home- game advantage. By performing more, we lessen our dependency on feeling comfortable in order to have a good performance. In this way, we will have a consistent level of performance everywhere we go.

  14. Performing gives us motivation, something to look foward to, and more of a reason to practice. It also gives us a chance to share music with others and for us to see how we are able to change the mood of the audience.

  15. When performing in a concert, i try to create music that the audience will like. When i perform at a concert i try to do my best and have a good posture, while in class i don't have to be as tense. Knowing that you are going to perform in a concert will cause you to practice harder for the concert.

  16. What PERFORMANCE means to me is that when you start a performance, your giving the audience what you have and showing to your greatest ability to what you have to give to your peeps and basically when performing your just there to have fun. Your also presenting yoursef as a performer as well.
When playing music its like art, showing your sense of style in an art gallery and shwing others what you made. As well with music. Your audience can see and hear you art peice, aso you are playing the music you've created.
Performance is really my think, especially when your perfroming by yourself on stage, but Im glad I joined band because when we start to perfrom the audience isnt just looking a one person, there looking at the entire band and for them to do that makes me brave because its not just me who's performing too. And I have confidence in my self knwoing that I can do it!

  17. Being a musician, you not only have to master your playing, but also master your playing in preformance. You have to have 100% confidence and grasp over your nerves. The reason that we practice, is to play our best in preformance. And the more preformances you participate in, the larger your grasp for your nerves and your confidence in your skill.

  18. the feeling during the concert is different for everyone, of course. there is a lot of pressure in playing a piece of music flawlessly infront of bright lights and an audience. But the feeling you get after playing is so rewarding because you finally get to listen to the finished product of something that you put countless hours into practicing for.

  19. The value of performance...hmm... To me as and actor the value of any peformance is HUGE! may the performance be theater to playing live music or presenting an award. The value of any performance is always to persent your work and then be able to improve afterwards.
Everybody has different feeling when they get on stage for me it is usually a bit of neverousness, a bit of excitement and a whole lot of adrenaline. there is always pressure to. The perssure to do your best and impress the audience. But that pressure can vary depending on where you are and who you are playing for but is always there.
The last value is that expirence of being on stage you come away feeling great and knowing mare then when you went on.

  20. In my opinion the value of performance is pretty big. A performance be it for your parents or the Queen is an opportunity to show off the skills you have learned and develloped. You must prepare and work towards performances, to make sure you and your work are in top form. Performances are also a way of comparing or challenging yourself to reach new levels. To perform you must rise up to overcome many obstacles, such as pressure, and it really pushes you and shows your true skill level. Performances also give you a sense of not only how good you are but what you will need to improve to be even better. All in all Performances are an opportunity to learn, show off and test yourself. That's pretty important stuff.

  21. The value of performance is the intergration of all the previous experience and efforts leading to the moment of action. In a succesful performance- at least in one that is live- the audience is able to experience what the performer is experiencing. The conveyed message (not necessarily true) shared between the audience and the perform during the performance. What the audience should not or may not see is the level of work put into the performance because it is crucial that the message is clearly conveyed without interference of, say show-offiness or nervousness, to the audience.

  23. Since I want to be perfect for what I'm doing, I set high value for all of performance I'm attending. Memorizing most of the music is basic for me to do before doing the performance and by doing that, I develop my goal more higher and higher that I can be better than what I used to be. So the performance is my goal, challenge and award that I can feel joy after finish all of the music I put my effort.

  24. Performances are important, yet their purpose varies for each type of performance, as stated in the question. At a school concert, a performance would be to show what you have been working on for x amount of months, as well as to display each students, and the ensembles, skill in music and to act as a friendly competition to increase every persons skill. On a tour, It is similar to a school concert, however you are showing off your school in a larger scope. In a feeder school concert, you want to show the audience your (as an ensemble) skill in band, to attract new students to the glory of making music. In the words of Uncle Sam, "I want you!" (In Sams case, it is a sense of nationalism. In ours it is the sense of making music). At festivals, the purpose of the performance is to set a mood and to inspire all those who are in listening range. In all of these performances, you need to show a large amount of conviction, your conviction about your skill, your love for music and to inspire the audience.

  25. Although I might nor say performance is the only point of music (there are many others, whether planned or consequential), it is certainly a major part of being a musician. Making music for an audience––whether it's in an auditorium, or a concert for one––is central to the musician's art. Just like a painter has a gallery where the art is finished and hanging opening the doors and letting people in takes the creative process one step further.

The particular venue definitely influences both musician and listener. I love playing for elementary schools, because it takes some pressure off (you're not playing for critics), and the music you make has a huge potential to influence the kids in a beneficial way. More serious concerts shouldn't require anymore focus, but when you've finished the feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment is much greater.

  26. Personally for me, performance is about not only sharing music with the audience and showing talents, but also about showing off. Every time I go up to perform, there's a small part of me that wants to entertain the audience aside from musically, like giving extra physical movement or depicting facial expressions. Performing is an opportunity for me to express to others emotions I could never publicize in normal everyday life. I would even compare it to acting because very often, that's what performing feels like to me.

  27. The value of performances as everyone has already mentioned is very high. Performances not only in front of a live audience, but maybe in a classroom in front of your classmates as in a solo or a demontration of skill, still makes one feel very nervous. However, after a perfomance, you feel quite good about what you have done and achieved. I definately felt that way for Chaos Theory, it was hard to prepare but when we finished playing it,I felt a sense of confindence/happiness. It's one thing to say you can do it, and it's another to say you did it. The benefits to a performance is that you get to play for others, and not just yourself. Sometimes you may get feedback which can help you improve your skills even more, such as the kiwanis festival. Performances are basically what you can learn from and enjoy, though it may be stressful at first, in the end each performance is a cherishable memory.

  28. Well i think with performance, in a big crowd is i could learn from my mistakes and try to make myself even better, well i am new anyway if i were to be in a concert it would be good for my self esteem and really put some confidence into myself i`d feel great if i did it, and welcome going to any events.
