  1. The thing that make the Van Tech Band program unique, different and special is that the band program is run highly and mainly by the student themselves, which is why we have a band concil (which is the only class within the school) it show that the student in the program actually care. When someone care about something they will work for it, which bring out the leadership in them hoping that they can change the program to make it better for them

  2. I think that our band program is really unique because every section of the band has its own section leader. The section leaders can relate to everyone in their section because they specialize on that instrument and they are the same age as everyone in their group. They are crucial to the success and joy of every student because they have the opportunity to communicate with everyone and help people with individual problems. This means that every student is involved with the leadership of the program because they will be less intimidated to give suggestions and ask for help from someone they know, such as a section leader.

  3. What makes our band program unique/different/special is what Raymond and Arielle said, that our band program is run by the students, and each section of the band has a section leader. If a student is very dedicated to the band program, then they themselves are part of the leadership of this program because they help others in their/other sections of the band, practice, follow directions. This does not necessarily mean section leaders only, but anybody can be involved in the leadership of this program, that takes part of this band of course.

  4. The thing that make the Van Tech Band program unique, different and special is that the band program is run a band concil. Students are able to make choices for themselves and take their own responsibility which helps them learn to care for themselves. Senior students also experience caring for the juniors. For example, my group leader, Hook (hes cool), who in the whistler trip gave us advice on what would be best from his past experience.

By the way, I loved the trip!!!!!!! 1 of the best experiences EVER.

  5. Some things that makes the Van Tech band prgram unique, is that as everyone has said, the program is run by the students, and it's not only by the older students, but there are representetives from every grade. Another thing is that all the bands (beginner, intermediate and senior) get to go on trips. It's also special because we have students, like Robin, who are interested in conducting, and gets the oppertunity to experience what it's like to work with a real band.

  6. The Van Tech Band is unique because of the amount of responsibility that students are willing to uphold in order to keep this program running. The trust between the teacher and student is one that is very special it shows the respect that we have for each other as well as how we are dependent of each other. Unlike other programs, this program is for students by students.

  7. I think that The Van Tech Band Program is very special because there are many positive aspects that stand out and change all students who are in the program. These aspects include the motivation of students and the leadership shown by older students in each section. As section leaders/assistant section leaders, we have an important role to play in the band program. We are the ones who make the Van Tech Band Program stand out from other school's band program and we strive to make our program as best as it can possibly be. For example, there are section leaders who take initiatives to make his/her section correct mistakes and improve on weaknesses of his/her section. This is one of the various characteristics that actually tells others who are not in the program that students in the program really care about band and they are willing to make great efforts to further enhance the band program.

  8. The Van Tech Band Program is unique, different, and special because students are highly involved in everything we do. Unlike my elementary band where our teacher basically just taught us how to play our instruments, and gave us our music, we get to recommend pieces for the band to play. If we don’t like something that’s happening in the program, we can feel free to tell Mr. Reid and/or others about it, and they make sure that we’re heard.

Students are involved in the leadership of the program by taking initiative constantly. For example, if there’s one or more students that don’t know how to play a part, their section leader/assistant will automatically help them in any way they can. When Mr. Reid’s here or away, senior students will help out with the attendance, help answer phone calls, and basically keep the band in line if there are any problems. Because of all of this leadership, students are vitally important to the functionality of the program.

  9. I think what makes the van tech band program special is how the band is maintained by the help of students through the music council and leadership of the section leads. Also, what makes the band unique is that we do other performances other regular band concerts. Section leads has the main role of being a leader in helping their sections with music, making sure the section is ready with music sheets and organizing out of class practice. However leadership isn’t only limited to section leaders. For example, students can easily be a part of the leadership as they can suggest sectional in their sections.

  10. I'm going to change things up here and say that our band is different because of our repertoire. I don't know for sure, but I highly doubt that any other high school band in the lower mainland is playing music as ambitious as pieces like Chaos Theory and Lonely Beach.

  11. Van tech band is special because of its ability to grow. Other school bands probably don't recruit much as Van tech does. Now I don’t mean annoying pop up ads or posters, I mean students telling their peer to join band.
Leader ship in the band is similar a responsible government, where the council /assembly is elected/recommended in. The council advises the Prime Minister, teacher, but the council could also offer and run on its own, with permission from the PM. The people in the council are leaders, but assistants are also leaders as well. I guess band is the only program where you get a chance to actually lead a group/section and see them improve.
Oh and i agree with everyone else

  12. The thing that makes the Van Tech band program unique, different and special is that it is mostly run by students. There is a section leader in each group of instruments, and that allows people to ask their section leader for help.

  13. I think that the things that make the Van Tech Band Program special and unique, as many people have said are that we have a Band Council, where we students run some of the events ourselves. This means that the students in band actually care about the program. And they get that opportunity, to be involved in the leadership of this program. As well, our band also goes on various trips, which provides us with fun and pleasure, creating our Band Program a special, unique and an enjoyable program.

  14. I have to agree with everyone else, what makes Van Tech Band special is that each sections have a leader - or in most cases a mentor. We also have a Band Council run by the students not bby teachers.

  15. Wow, there is so much to say about that Q's, but there could only be one right answer which is that everybody who signed up for this program is involve in everything that goes on in this program, and to show that this involvement and contribution is real, everybody makes an effort and puts in there hardest into music and is willing to take a higher level of any expectations. Thats what makes everybody so unique and special. Some people make think a bit more diff. from how I see it, but everybody has there own a opinion about this and maybe thats what makes them also uniqe and special!
THIS LONG ANSWER GOES W/ THE SAME Q'S FOR #2 (somewhat)

  16. Anwser one: what makes US unique is our enthusiasm, our variety of instraments, our large group, and we ave better music. What else is there to say?

Anwser Two: Our program is very good, and it takes some very dedicated leaders to make it possible. I honestely dont know how they work, but I know the result of it, and Its all I need to know. Students are also dedicated to make music, and make "GOOD QUALITY" music possible.

  17. 1. What makes the Van Tech Band unique is having a music council for both band and orchestra. The music council is run by students so not only do teachers get to make decisions, students also get a say too.

    2. Leadership is shown with section leaders. With section leaders, other people in the section can ask for assistance from their section leader.

  18. the vantech band program is unique because it is ran by dedicated kids. in a nutshell: the band program is ran by students for students. And like a family, we all take care of each other and we know what our roles and responsibilities are.
The music council, section and assistant section leader is a way for students to be part of the leadership program because we help make the decisions in the band program.

  19. Van Tech Band is unque in many ways. For example its size. most school have big bands but as bit as ours. Not only that but the size of our beinging band. Most high schools only have a senoir band because no one is will to start and be new at playing an instrument. Also the dedication of the band members. I have an old family friend who use to teach band in high schools and I was describing our band and he was very surprised at the dedication.

The students are involed in the leadership of program by first of all coming to class. That right away show ladership. Second those who are section leaders have to make sure their section has all their equipment and if they can play. That is leadership. The leadership is also how the oldder ones taking responsabilty to help th younger ones. anf how everybody to be a band and play to together.

  20. What I think is unique about our program is that is driven by our will to succeed and improve. Many people put alot of effort in and I hope we all get alot out.
What is different about our program is that because we make alot of effort we achieve very high levels. Mr. reid gives us challenging pieces and we as a group put in tons of time and effort so that we can play and understand the Music and the stories it tells.
What I find special about this program is how I could learn to play at a senior Band level in less than a year, because of the commitment and effort of the people supporting me. At the beginning of the year I couldn't make a noise, and when I did it was a annoying squeak, and now I can play pieces like Fairest and October. It's all because of people who helped me and were patient with me because they wanted to share the joy they receive from making music. I am so so grateful to be in this program and I want to thank you guys for helping me get here.
This is great band with a commitment to exellence.

  21. The Van Tech Band Program is a program that's mostly driven by students. With motivation from our teacher, we strive to obtain success by taking leadership, initiative, and hard work. There is not one class or program in this school that I've seen achieve or even attempt this, and I think it's amazing. Leadership is taken up by our music council, section leaders, and assistant section leaders, who represent and voice the concerns of their section, but that doesn't mean other students don't work their butts off.

  22. The dedication and amount of student involvement makes this band program unique. Students are highly involved in the band program as section leaders, music council members and just by sharing ideas or participating in class discussions.

  23. Van Tech Band is consist of many students that if one part is missing, then the sound wouldn't be nice compare to what we all want to get. That makes many students gather to one group, having same one goal and try to do our best to achieve that goal.
From that goal, we shows different leadership by cheer up peers, helping others, and doing our best.

  24. Not to sound like I'm blowing my own horn, but the leadership in the Van Tech band is fantastic. There are many levels on which students can participate and help direct the band in the ways they wish to go. We have the Music Council to plan events, fundraise and bring the band together and as a tool to bring up any issues other students might have and things which may need to be fixed. The music ocuncil is also a link to the stings program, which bring sthe unity and community we have over onto the strings side of things. We have CS students, who peer tutor, who help organise trips, who are always available for a student to direct a question to. We also have Section Leaders to deal with issues specific to a certain instrument, such as sectionals, or help learning how to play something difficult. The structure we have for leadership is awesome, and on top of that we have students who are simply dedicated and helpful people, who will step up and help out, remind students of important things, or simply lead by good example. It is that we have students like that that really shows how unique our band is. Not every school or band has the kind of dedication where a student, with no official leadership position, will help a substitute teacher get the class' attention, or remind everyone of a correction the teacher had previously made, or get up to conduct a peice. Our commitment to helping each other out is outstanding, and makes us stand out in the world of high school bands.

  25. I don't know if other bands programs/classes have this, but I think something that makes our band really different is that we learn other stuff on top of music making. For example in one of the band classes we learned about rhetoric which is technically not related to music where as working on articulation and dynamic contrast. Not only do we learn about politics in band class, but sometimes we learn about math or do other exercises that contributes to making music without making music.

And, as everyone else has mentioned, another thing that makes our band special is the level of commitment and effort put forward from the students in the band program. Thus, showing the leadership being directed by the students.

  26. I think that our program is more special than others because in band we are all a part of a family. In any other class, most of the work is more individual, and you care more about yourself than that of the whole class. In band however, we all have to work together for a common goal, and it brings us closer together. Because we are all working for the same thing, students feel more responsible to the group, and are more inclined to take on leadership responsibilities. Also, with the multi-grade setup, the senior and junior students teach each other, the junior students teaching the seniors about leadership (maybe not directly, but it is there) and the seniors teaching the juniors about music in general, as well as setting an example.

  27. Well the amount of resources the school contributes is one thing; it shows how important our program is to the school. Another thing would be, as others have mentioned, the fact that we don't just sit in a classroom and play, we actually learn about music theory and many other topics related to music.

The biggest thing, in my opinion, is the amount of student commitment and leadership put in to make the band program a success. I mean we have a music council composed of students, section leaders who assist those in their section and accept responsibilities given to them by the teacher. And of course there are many other things that students do as well as many other things that make our program unique.

  28. Proactive Leadership: teachers and youth that are actively taking responsibility for themselves and others in the group. Peer mentoring and teaching. Integrity in behavior and integrity musically. Desire to play interesting/challenging repertoire. It all comes down to initiative and individuals making up a really good leadership pyramid: just like the pyramid of balance when we play.

  29. I'm going to be objective here, so I apologize in advance if I offend anyone.

One significant thing about the band that I haven't seen mentioned yet is the inclusion of the band teacher (not sucking up, really). Aside from offering quality music and concepts, he also provides various opportunities that other bands don't get, like playing for a soccer team or being in chamber groups for Christmas music at elementary schools. He is ambitious, active, and passionate, and that is reciprocated from his students.

However, consequently I believe the student initiative in the band is inspired. Not to say that there isn't any true motive for leadership--I do believe that the students work hard because they care for the band--but I feel as if the absence of the band teacher would make the leadership dwindle to eventually small quantities.

  30. What sets aside our program from the rest out there in vancouver is the amount of student involvement and the "slackness" of Mr. Reid. Students take a lot of inititive and help run many of the things we have, for instance, chocolate sales, collecting money and forms for banff etc. Now when I say "slackness", i dont actually mean Mr. Reid is lazy. I just mean that we're allowed to share our opinions openly in the class without getting in trouble. Having the freedom of expression is the best way to learn. Teachers and students can benefit greatly from this. A student can share what he/she has to offer, and other students or teacher can counterattack his/her argument.

  31. Well i think that the vantech program is unique by, it's like a cooperation with everyone in there. I think Mr.Reid works pretty hard to make everything work and the students also love to help out. They take the time and iniative to help out the begginner students such as i with helping us learn.
